Some people are unlucky. Some people are REALLY unlucky. If you got those two, encouraged them to mate and then studied how amazingly unlucky their offspring were, you would still only be partially able to comprehend Robert Kubica's level of unluckiness (Is that a real word? Ah, it doesn't seem imprecindable.) Not content with damn near killing himself rallying, when he attempted to slice himself in half using armco whilst still in the car (impressive, that), he's now hurt himself doing something really bloody dangerous. Yes, he fell over in his back garden on some ice, and has broken his leg, meaning he needs another operation, some extra nuts and bolts and a month of plaster cast. He's got more metal going on than a box of meccano. Still, I live in Cumbria, so I can confirm - ice is nasty stuff indeed. Still... You wait ages for a Frenchman in F1, then two arrive at once. Hot on the heels of Pic, comes Grosjean. Or, to be more accurate, comes Grosjean again . Romain replaced Piquet Jr back in '09 and drove 7 races fore Renault, with a best result of 13th. After a couple of years back in the shallow end of motorsport, he won the GP2 championship this year, so maybe he's ready this time. With Lotus Renault going for the 'most number of drivers in 3 seasons award' (Kubica, Petrov, Heidfeld, Senna, Raikkonen, Grosjean) Romain will need to find his feet pretty rapidly - the team aren't that French any more, and failure isn't likely to be tolerated. It should be interesting to see how he gets on against Kimi. His problem is that, even if he trounces our Finnish friend, people will still question his ability, as Kimi is a tad... how can we put this...? Out of favour, and possibly out of form. Having exhausted the supply of Coke and Choc Ices in the Rallying community, Kimi Raikkonen is returning to F1 with Renault. Or Lotus. But not that Lotus. You know, the other one with Senna and Petrov. Only... not with them anymore. Clear? Good. Although rumours linking him with Williams were interesting, that always seemed pretty unlikely, unless he happened to have a championship winning chassis stuffed down his pants. A a few million quid. The Renault/Lotus thing was a bit of a shocker, but I'm glad the monosyllabic one is back again. In no particular order, here's my reasoning: He's a brilliant driver. Sometimes. He can't be arsed. Sometimes. He confused the hell out of Ferrari. 6 World Champs on the grid! He likes choc ices. He told Martin Brundle he'd been for a s**t. It seems that, after his rally crash yesterday, Kubica's first words on regaining consciousness were to ask if his navigator was OK. I already like the guy a lot - he just went up even further in my estimation. It seems that the armco that he crashed into penetrated the car, causing much of his damage, including a partially severed hand needing 7 hours of surgery. The signs are apparently promising though, although he may need additional operations to sort out his knee and shoulder. Original suggestions that he would be out of F1 for a year now seem to be an over-estimation, but Renault Team Chief Eric Bouillier has said it will be a couple of months at least. Clearly, at this stage, these can only be guesses, until Kubica starts to recover. Renault now have the tricky problem of deciding who to put in the car in Kubica's absence. Grosjean and Senna are their 3rd drivers, but neither are likely to perform at anywhere near the level Kubica would have. It'll be interest...
